New single “Chosen to Deserve” by Wednesday
Wednesday’s new single “Chosen to Deserve” was released January 18th. This marked the announcement of their highly anticipated upcoming album “Rat Saw God”. The music video for the single, directed by Spencer Kelly, was filmed in the neighborhood that Karly Hartzman’s parents still live in.
“Wednesday are honest chroniclers of the Southern everyday, surveying a no-frills landscape of ashen Dairy Queens, run-over dogs, and pissed-on wallpaper. Their stories will make you laugh, wince, recoil, and reminisce. On “Chosen to Deserve,” the lead single from the Asheville band’s debut studio album, Rat Saw God, singer and guitarist Karly Hartzman details a messy adolescence full of fuck-ups and first times: skipping school, having sex in the back of an SUV, witnessing friends overdose on Benadryl. “Now that it’s been awhile I’ll get around to tellin’ you all my worst,” she informs a lover, not looking for absolution but just saying it like it is, “just so you know what you’ve been chosen to deserve.”

“The Asheville Band To Watch Wednesday have announced a new album, Rat Saw God, which will be out in April. It was preceded by the epic “Bull Believer” last fall, and it’s one of our most anticipated albums of 2023. It was written and recorded shortly after 2021’s Twin Plagues at Drop Of Sun studio. Today, they’re sharing a new single from it, “Chosen To Deserve.”
‘Chosen to Deserve’ is a writing exercise I gave myself to try to recreate the iconic song by Drive-By Truckers ‘Let There Be Rock’ but with my own experiences from growing up and fucking around and getting into stupid shit,” the band’s Karly Hartzman said in a statement. The video directed by Spencer Kelly shows the setting of my upbringing and antics: my parents’ neighborhood in Greensboro, NC and Lake Myers RV Resort.”
